ZAMPOGNA

The zampogna was a sort of bagpipe formerly in use among Italian peasants.

ZAPATEADO

The zapateado is a Flamenco dance involving complex syncopated stamping of the heels and toes in imitation of castanets.

ZITHER

The zither is an Austrian member of a family of musical instruments consisting of one or more strings stretched over a resonating frame. The modern concert zither has up to 45 strings of which five, passing over frets, are plucked with a plectrum for melody, and the remainder are plucked with the fingers for harmonic accompaniment. Simple stick and board zithers are widespread in Africa; in India the vina represents a developed form of stick zither, while in Indonesia and the Far East versions of the long zither prevail. Tuning is by movable bridges and the long zither is played with a plectrum, producing an intense tone of sharp attack.

ZOLTAN KODALY

Zoltan Kodaly was a Hungarian composer. He was born in 1882 and died in 1967.

ZOUK

Zouk is Caribbean dance music originally created in France by musicians from the Antilles. It draws on Latin American, Haitian, and African rhythms and employs electronic synthesisers as well as ethnic drums. Zouk was developed from 1978 and is popular in Paris and parts of the West Indies.

ZUFOLO

The zufolo is a small flute or flageolet often used to teach birds.
